Ronde van Drenthe

14Apr09

Last year my team had few certainties that they could bank on. They could be sure that if I didn’t puncture I would crash. This year luck has been on my side (touch wood) with only two flat tyres and no crashes so far (touch wood).

Just because I have avoided bad luck doesn’t mean the team has. Yesterday was crazy 10 punctures between 3 riders. With 5 going to Logan. The cobbles of Drenthe had taken their toll.

Drenthe is regarded as the little Paris-Roubaix. The cobbles didn’t start until 91km. The weather was nice with no wind so the bunch was mostly together by the time it reached the first stretch of cobbles. Riders were going everywhere many ending up in the bushes. For the next 40km the sections continued. The bunch never really broke up but the pace never let up either.

By the end of the last section there was maybe 80 riders left. I was dying for a drink after only having two bidons for the race by this stage. I finally got one and some coke for me and Bert and Peter who were also left in the bunch. From this point the finale began and attack after attack went. I was in the box and with 20km to go I cramped massively and had to limp to the finish.
