Robbie not in the selection for 2010 World Champs

Robbie McEwen has announced via Twitter that he is not one of the ten riders that will make up the Australian road race team for the 2010 World Championships to be held in less than 40 days.

“I won’t be at Worlds in Geelong. Not selected. Don’t know who the nine are but know I’m not. Yes I’m disappointed. Thought I’d be good there.”

Robbie is one of the most experienced riders in the international peloton let alone in Australia. When a rider like Robbie says he will be good, he will be good. Personally I think it is a mistake to leave someone like Robbie off Australian’s roster. However, the Australian selectors are in a difficult position with so many strong riders that could be leaders in their own right. Hopefully the logic behind this decision was to support one or two riders instead of spreading resources too thinly and have a team with not enough workers.

At the end of the day I am a fan of Robbie and so naturally I am dissapointed that he won’t be racing in Geelong and surprised that with ten spots, thanks to Cadel Evans having a free entry for being defending champion ontop of the normal quota of 9 riders, that he couldn’t be squezzed in.
